Fighting an Idol of Comfort with the Truths of Godly Ambition, Self-Sacrifice, and God Himself

I.   Truths of Godly Ambition

Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

 II.   Truths of Self-Sacrifice

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

1 Timothy 5:8

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

[Job speaking] I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.

Proverbs 5:18-20

Romans 13:13-14

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
